Rajnandgaon (Chhattisgarh): On November 7, 2024, the 4th State-Level Buddhist Conference was held in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh. This historic event took place at Tapobhoomi Oxyzone Mohara, located on the banks of the Shivnath River, and thousands of Buddhist monks, devotees, and followers attended. Buddhists from different countries participated in this sacred conference.
On November 8, the second day of the conference, Rusen Kumar visited the Buddhist Vihara in Rajnandgaon. There, he met Buddhist monks and devotees from Myanmar and Vietnam.
On this occasion, Rusen Kumar met senior social worker Rajnandgaon resident Kanhaiya Lal Khobragade.
A Devoted Follower of Dr. Ambedkar, Committed to Social Service
Kanhaiya Lal Khobragade, a devoted follower of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, shared his life journey with Rusen Kumar. At the age of 84, Kanhaiya Lal appeared extremely healthy and active. He shared that he first met Dr. Ambedkar at the age of 15, which inspired him to dedicate himself to the spread of Buddhism and Ambedkar Social Mission. He was born on March 11, 1939, in Rajnandgaon.
He also mentioned that a nationwide movement was launched to recognize Dr. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, April 14, as a public holiday. During this movement, he participated in a “Rail Roko” protest in Rajnandgaon, which led to him being imprisoned for a month. He also played a key role in Dr. Ambedkar’s ashes procession, where he traveled with the ashes across 45 districts in Madhya Pradesh.
Continuous Struggle Against Untouchability
Inspired by Dr. Ambedkar’s teachings, Kanhaiya Lal Khobragade led several movements against untouchability. He believes that anyone can achieve great heights by drawing inspiration from Dr. Ambedkar’s life. He said, “Dr. Ambedkar was like a great tree under whose shade one could gain knowledge. After meeting him, I made a firm decision to contribute to his mission.”
Discussion on Social Change
Kanhaiya Lal Khobragade also shared many interesting insights about social change with Rusen Kumar. They engaged in an in-depth discussion on social issues and future plans. During this meeting, Rusen Kumar presented him with his book ‘Swadhyay Se Shakti’ (Strength Through Self-Study), which Kanhaiya Lal accepted with delight, extending his best wishes for future efforts.
